Methodology
SBL utilizes the Problem Solving for Better Health methodology (PSBH®).
model is used as a tool to enable individuals in a community to identify local solutions to local problems. It challenges individuals to accept responsibility for improving their quality of life and gives them a basic, but highly effective set of skills to do just that. It has proven to be a powerful tool in the hands of people committed to creating real, transformative change within themselves and in those around them. Thus, small-scale, problem-solving projects are developed that will make a significant difference in health problems and directly benefit members within their community.
The process begins once a group of approximately 40-50 individuals from a community attend a PSBH® workshop and brought with them a problem they feel is of particular concern and wish to solve. The workshop consists of a 1 to 2 day training where participants are challenged to rethink a health problem in their community and follow a structured path toward solving it. Each participant must ask a "Good Question:" Will doing what, with whom, where, and for how long, achieving what the desired outcome? They are led through this process by an experienced facilitator, who has successfully implemented and completed a project. Participants are encouraged to utilize additional in-kind resources and networking opportunities that will aid in the successful completion of their projects. The end result is a realistic, structured action plan that can be implemented at the end of the workshop.
